Memphis Mayor AC Wharton's walk through Southland Mall was a step toward a crime-free Whitehaven.

"This is an area on its way back. People a few years ago tried to write this off," said a hopeful Wharton.

The mayor, along with Police Director Larry Godwin and Council Chairman Harold Collins wanted to reassure store owners that they're safe after Saturday's deadly shooting of a mall security guard. 28-year-old Marques Rainey was shot and killed while he was trying to break-up a fight between two men inside the mall.

"He was doing his job." Rainey's mother, Margie Brownlee, says. The former Marine knew his job was risky. But he rarely talked about the dangers to his wife and five-year-old daughter.
