I am trying to develop a list of retailers that conduct bag/parcel/handbag 'flashes' or checks of associates as they leave the store. This seems like a 'no brainer' when it comes to being a prevention measure but I am hearing that there are retailers out there that do not do this. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Larry

When I left Macy's this was standard procedure; the Rules & Regs provided for this procedure.

My company has a policy in place that is in line with store use lockers. We let the associate know that at any time LP or management can and will check lockers. The associates also are informed that package/handbag checks are required when associates leave the store with packages, backpacks or handbags. If they do not want their handbags or backpacks checked, they must leave them in their car or at home. Female assocates are given clear clutch purses that they can take to their registers. This they can put make-up and other items they may need during their shift. One note, when we check purses, we just have the associate open the purse and we will look in. At no time will we touch or handle an associate's purse.

Larry - As John wrote, if it's part of the policy and procedure you shouldn't have any issues. I would add, issue and require the use of clear plastic purses. This would work well in your particular setting. I know Boscovs's still requires it. Their clear bags include their logo. I don't have a list os retailers that do employee exit bag checks, but it's still a popular practice. The reason's some do not include the hit-and-miss policy enforcement.

Our policy here is random bag/parcel checks when associates, visitors, and vendors leave the building. Not every one, every time, but often enough that everyone knows we ask periodically. There is a section on this in both our associate handbooks and LP manuals.

My retailer does this. It is the responsibility of the door greeter during trade hours, after hours it is the responsibility of the duty manager. LP do conduct Flash Checks when we are available but that is not to often as our stores trade late and we usually don't work up until close.
