San Jose: Fry's guard stabbed while trying to stop suspected shoplifter

Updated: 01/05/2010 01:52:29 PM PST

A security guard at the Fry's Electronics store in San Jose was stabbed Monday evening by a suspected shoplifter, according to police.

The suspected shoplifter got away. The security guard was not seriously hurt.

San Jose police officer Jermaine Thomas did not provide a description of the suspect. He said police responded to Fry's at 550 East Brokaw Road about 7:30 p.m. after a security guard reported he was stabbed in the arm.

Fry's spokesman Manuel Valerio said the guard received stitches for a "laceration" that was about an inch long on his forearm. Valerio did not discuss what was stolen.

"This person was doing his job. We're glad he's fine," Valerio said.

A man who said he was the victim of the stabbing called the Mercury News to confirm that he is "fine." But he wanted to add one point: he's not a security guard. At Fry's, his title is "loss prevention officer."

All too many times the media refers to us as "security guards" does this ignorance of the media irritate you all like it does me?
The one time I made the news last year (see shoplifting forums) they got the Loss Prevention Officer title right but got 90% of the other facts and details wrong including what company I worked for!!!! LMAO.....if anyone is interested in seeing the video for the news story drop me an email......

I think often it comes down to what the local news writers find in the police blotter they review when looking for their "scoop". If the police department's report states "security guard" instead of the actual title, that's what hits the press. Now, a more discerning writer might bother to do a little investigative work at the source and find out more details, including proper titles of those involved. Wishful thinking?
