Exception reports show an associates ringing number flagging for selling and redeeming a gift card. Video review of the sale shows employee clearly hands giftcard to customer. Employee somehow uses same caes 2 days later during an associate purchase... Company wants cashier interviewed obviously...I haven't had to conduct these types of interviews without seeing how card was obtained... How do you guys handle?

Oops...Need to edit 2nd sentence. Employee somehow obtains card then uses same giftcard that she issued to customer 2 days later, giftcard is used during an employee purchase. Remaining balance on card is small under - $20, Notified DLPM but no response from him yet. Interested in how the experienced interviewer's handle...

I had this come up before. The associate knew the customer, who later gave the associate the card to use. If the transaction for the gift card issued is good, then all you might have is policy violation with the associate ringing friends and/or family. Don't assume that the associate took or switched the card only. Look at everything that could be the reason for the associate to have the card. If you have good video of the customer receiving the card, then the only other way for your associate to get and use the card is to get it from that customer. So when and if you interview, What are you going after? "How did you get the Gift Card?" "It was my friends, she let me use it because she owed me money." Now what? Did she violate policy? I would document what you have now, and continue to watch her, and her Gift Card transactions. Maybe she might do something else that explains what is going on. Like the customer is a friend and is coming in and shoplifting merchandise and returning for Gift Cards because her friend (your associate) is not checking ID, using incorrect information to process return. Good luck, let us know what you find out.

If time allows, you might consider working backwards on past gift card sales for that associate, too.
"What did you want me to do, yell trick or treat at him?!" |
