Just wondering if anyone else shared my collecting habits? I have 40 badges from various retail LP and security departments. I have acquired most of them on eBay, but I've picked up a few at antique shops and shows.

Speaking of metallic badges in the private sector, how do you like the badge we put on the cover of RETAIL CRIME, SECURITY AND LOSS PREVENTION. AN ENCYCLOPEDIC REFERENCE? You can see the cover on Amazon.com (or just type the title into your search engine window).

I think the 7-point star is the classic badge, but I am partial since that was what I was issued in my first LP job. The badge on the cover is representative of a few I have in my collection.

Chuck - Is that badge one that either you or John used for your respective companies? Just happens I was going through the book looking for some reference material. Like the title says, " Encyclopedic Reference". Since the publication I've thought of a few more topics that could have been covered.

Curt: Re your question in LP Info, the badge on the coverof our book was selected from a badge maker's catalog since it was generic and did not ID a company. At Macy's we had a company badge which ID'd Macys - also had a very official ID Card which was in leather badge case with badge. Chuck also had individualized badges. Our badges had "banner" at top of star which contained title of holder -Agent, Investigator, Deputy Director, etc. Each badge was designed appropriate to the state ion which the store was located. We too have found topics we somehow missed and I'm keeping a list of them in case we ever have a 2nd Edition - also found several typos and wrong page numbers for illustrations . Edit as you might, errors still slip through. Hope all goes well. John

Editing of this 690 page encyclopedic work was the responsibility of the publisher, i.e. Elsevier Books, not the authors and contributors. Content, including subject matter omitted, was John and my responsibility and despite the fact we racked our brains for months to ensure we covered all the topics that pertain to the world of retail security/loss prevention, we missed the dead-center of the 100% bullseye. Oh, the tears that come with being human and error. That said, the book is enjoying a wider market than most security industry books, because many libraries have included it in their inventories.

I've never collected badges, but I have an extensive collection of LE patches (from my LE days) that I have recently given some thought to donating to a police department. I have well over 1,500 patches.

Curt, Sell some of them on eBay. I've been unloading 5 18-gallon tubs of patches over the years and using the money to donate to fund other eBay purchases and make donations to other causes

I would never sell police patches on ebay as they might fall into the wrong hands.I collected the patches during my LE days and will only donate to a PD. Many PDs have a policy that they will only exchange patches with law enforcement for this reason.

"Badges, we don't need no stinking badges! Seriously, Lp with badges, Why" Because it is a professional means of identifying yourself to a suspected shoplifter when you are making an apprehension. Have you ever been on the witness stand and had to testify regarding how you identified yourself? It can become a very messy situation - especially when the suspect says they fought back because they thought they were being robbed by an unknown assailant. Believe me, I've been there. It only took once to educate me.

I've never worked anywhere that issued LP badges or for that matter, corporate security badges. At least not in the 7 point star or LE like sense. It seems to me (and I may be wrong) that they are becoming more scarce instead of more prevalent. I have only 2 or 3 friends whose company still gives them. One is with FedEx Corporate Security and 2 are bank corporate security. I may have to check out ebay and see what's available. Sounds like an interesting hobby, although I can already hear my wife now, who thinks that I need LESS hobbies! lol
